A preliminary accident report has revealed the cause of death of a Jasper coal miner.

The report filed by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration said preshift examiner Marius “Slick” Shepherd, 32, suffered a fatal head injury at Oak Grove Mine last Monday.

The report said Shepherd was riding on a 20-ton locomotive around 6:30 p.m. on June 19 when it lost control, causing Shepherd to be thrown or jump from the locomotive. After receiving medical care, he was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he later passed away.

The report said the locomotive’s operator had nonfatal injuries.

Philip A. Ingram investigated the accident.

Funeral arrangements for Shepherd will be announced by Faith Chapel Funeral Home in Jasper.
