CORDOVA — The Cordova Blue Devils suffered their second loss of the season on Saturday night, falling to the Class 3A, No. 1 Plainview Bears, 79-72, at Cordova.

The defeat did little to mar outstanding double-double performances by Jayce Willingham and Isaac Chatman. Willingham scored 29 points with 12 rebounds, while Chatman had 25 points with 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

The Blue Devils led through most of the first period before a 10-2 run by the Bears gave Plainview the 20-16 edge.

Cordova roared back in the second period — battling back from an eight-point deficit with a 14-5 run to regain control, 32-30, at the half.

The two teams traded one-point leads to open the third period, but Plainview held the scoring edge, 31-21 to take command, 61-53.

The Blue Devils were able to close the Bears’ lead to three points in the early stages of the fourth period, at 64-61, but Plainview answered every Cordova basket with a response. The Bears connected on key three-point shots and free throws for the 79-72 win.

Saturday’s game was the second straight top 5 matchup for the Devils. Cordova defeated Westminster Christian, the No. 3 team in Class 4A, 49-47 on Friday night in Huntsville.

Cordova (8-2) plays in the Steel City Classic on Wednesday at Samford University’s Pete Hanna Center.

The Blue Devils next home game comes against Westminster Christian on Jan. 9.

Both of Cordova’s losses have come to No. 1 teams. Huffman, the No. 1 team in Class 7A, defeated the Blue Devils 71-59.

Plainview improved to 9-0 on the season with the win.
