Cordova upends No. 1 Sacred Heart

HOMEWOOD — The No. 2 Cordova Blue Devils bounced back from an opening- day loss to Parker to beat the Class 1A, No. 1 Sacred Heart Cardinals, 69-63, on Thursday at the Steel City Invitational at Samford University’s Pete Hanna Center.

The Blue Devils’ senior trio of Isaac Chatman, Jayce Willingham and Demetrius Kirk kept the three-time defending state champion Cardinals off balance with good offensive defensive performances, as well as forcing key turnovers.

Chatman led Cordova with a double-double performance of 21 points with 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. Willingham also recorded a double-double of 17 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. Kirk added 17 points.

Cordova (9-3) stayed in front of Sacred Heart by a three-point margin through most of the first period, settling on 16-13 edge.

The Cardinals tied the game late in the second period, 27-27, then outscored the Blue Devils 9-8 in the remainder of the half to take a 36-35 lead at the break. The third period saw the teams battle through eight lead changes, but Cordova was able to pull ahead thanks to a three-point shot by Kirk, 54-53.

Chatman scored seven points in the fourth period to help lead the Blue Devils to the victory, 69-63.

On Wednesday, Cordova fell to the Parker Thundering Herd 67-53 to open the tournament. In the loss, Willingham recorded a double-double of 26 points and 14 rebounds, while Chatman scored 15 points.

The Blue Devils conclude the Invitational against the Homewood Patriots today at 10:30 a.m. at Samford.
