CORNER — The Corner Yellow Jackets and Northside Rams provided all the fans in attendance Friday night in Corner with an exciting start to the 2018 season, as Northside earned a narrow 26-25 victory over the Jackets.

In a game that featured five lead changes, the Rams got on the board first, scoring on their initial drive of the night. Running back Luke Stripling carried the ball on seven of the drive’s eight plays, and found the end zone from five yards out to put Northside ahead 6-0.

Corner answered right away, mounting its own seven-play drive which ended with Jacket quarterback Andrew Baker scoring on a two-yard plunge up the middle. Freshman kicker Alex Johnson added the point after to give Corner a 7-6 lead.

Northside went back on top before the first quarter ended, aided by an Andy Maluda interception return of 38 yards to the Corner six.

The Rams only needed two plays to punch the football in from there, going up 14-7 with 39 seconds remaining in the opening period.

Corner closed the gap on the very next possession, as the Jackets drove 61 yards for their second touchdown. Baker completed three passes during the drive, the last one a 12-yard scoring toss to Joshua Myrick. The extra point failed and Northside maintained a 14-13 lead with 9:47 to go in the first half.

After forcing two Ram punts, Corner climbed on top just before halftime. The 63-yard drive was capped by a six yard Nick Brashear run to put the Jackets ahead 19-14 with only 22 seconds remaining. That lead lasted only 15 seconds, however, as the Rams returned the ensuing kickoff all the way back to the Corner 23-yard line. On the next play, Northside quarterback Jake Corkren heaved a touchdown pass just beyond the reach of the Jacket defenders, and Northside went into intermission up by a score of 20-19.

Corner once again came right back, scoring on its first possession of the second half to take what would be the final Jacket lead of the game, 25-20. Brashear scored his second touchdown to put the exclamation point on the 11-play drive.

Not to be outdone, the Rams then held the ball for 15 plays of their own, eating up over eight minutes on the clock before scoring with 11:33 remaining in the game to go ahead for good, 26-25.

Corner gamely tried to immediately battle back, driving deep into Ram territory once more. This time the Northside defense rose to the occasion, stopping Corner on fourth down at the five-yard line, and that was as close as the Jackets would get before time expired.

Next week, Corner will try to break into the win column on the road against the Oak Grove Tigers.
