The previous facility was destroyed by fire more than a year ago.

Jasper Mayor David O’Mary said Odom Construction, a local building contractor, has been awarded the project, which is expected to cost approximately $1.7 million.

In other business, council members:

•approved up to $49,000 in funding — to be paid in two yearly installments — to hire G. Square Professional Mapping Services for a city prohject.

•approved travel for workers from the Jasper Parks and Recreation Department to attend the Alabama Recreation and Parks Association conference Jan. 28-30, 2018, in Tuscaloosa.

•introduced a resolution to show the city’s support of legislation requiring all child care facilities and daycare facilities, including preschools, be subject to licensing and regulation by the Department of Human Resources.

The Alabama League of Municipalities supports passage of the legislation, O’Mary said, and encouraged city officials to support the legislation.
