CURRY — Following a mistake-prone first half, Curry’s offense found its groove in the third quarter en route to a 28-0 victory over St. John Paul II at Hudson-O’Rear Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets have now recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 1992-93 seasons.

On Friday, Curry led just 7-0 at the half before putting the game away with a 15-point third quarter.

Hunter Glass got the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard in the first quarter with an 11-yard touchdown run. Luke Tidwell’s extra point gave Curry a 7-0 lead with 5:59 left in the opening quarter.

Peyton Luster helped break the game open in the second half, adding Curry’s next touchdown on a 50-yard run at the 7:50 mark of the quarter for a 13-0 lead.

With 1:56 left in the third, John Moon hit Colton Aaron on a 15- yard touchdown pass. Tidwell’s extra point pushed the lead to 20-0 with 1:56 left in the quarter.

Curry added to its lead at the 41-second mark when a bad snap led to a Curry safety for a 22-0 advantage going into the final quarter.

Curry’s Austin Patton added the final score, a 34-yard run into the end zone, with 10:06 left in the game.

Fifteen different players had carries for the Yellow Jackets with Luster leading the way with 58 yards and a touchdown on six carries. Aaron Ozwalt had 40 yards on four carries and Burton added 35 yards on three carries.

As a team, Curry rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns on 45 carries. Moon completed 3 of 9 passes for 57 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Colton Aaron had two catches for 31 yards and Wendall Ball had one reception for 26 yards.

The Yellow Jackets have an off weeek before playing the Class 5A, Region 6 opener against Hayden on Sept. 15.

Curry has now outscored its first two opponents 53-0. The Yellow Jackets defeated Berry 25-0 last week.

Curry last registered back-to-back shutouts with the seaosn finale in 1992 (40-0 over Red Bay) and the season opener in 1993 (27-0) over Carbon Hill.
