DORA — The Dora Police Department is searching for two subjects involved in a string of forgeries and fraudulent uses of stolen credit cards and checks.

Jacob Kevin Martin and Crystal Michelle Phelps are being sought by the police for receiving stolen property, forgery and fraudulent use of a credit card.

“It’s checks and credit cards stolen from a family member. They’ve been using them all over Walker and West Jefferson counties and using the checks and cards fraudulently,” said Dora Police Chief Jared Hall.

Martin has been charged with receiving stolen property, fourth, two counts of forgery, third, and two counts of fraudulent use of a credit and debit card. Phelps has been charged with receiving stolen property, fourth, and two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card.

Hall said businesses where Martin and Phelps had used the credit cards and checks included Dora Discount Pharmacy, Dollar General in Dora, motels in Jasper and the Wal-Mart stores in Sumiton and Adamsville.

“It’s probably in excess of 30 or 40 transactions in the last month” since the cards and checks were stolen, Hall said.

While the police have been searching for the subjects, they’ve had no luck in making contact with Martin and Phelps.

Hall described the case as one of the “property crimes we deal with quite a bit. Forgeries and possession of forged instruments and fraudulent use of credit cards, it’s gotten to where it’s a pretty popular occurrence.”

Dora police are asking for anyone who may have seen Martin or Phelps to call 205-648-3211 or contact police through the department’s Facebook page.
