Dora's Cain suspended one game by AHSAA

Dora head football coach Mike Cain has been suspended one game by the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) for unsportsmanlike conduct following the Bulldogs' 29-21 road loss to Hamilton on Friday.

Hamilton scored two touchdowns in the final 50 seconds to pick up the come-from-behind victory. Dora has possession of the ball as the game ended.

Following the final play, Cain attempted to catch up with the referees, feeling that time was left on the clock.

Cain, in his second year as Dora's head coach, was stopped by police.

Dora Principal Paige Skalnik was notified of the suspension by the AHSAA on Saturday.

"It was a very disappointing loss and things got emotional in the fourth quarter," Skalnik said. "(Coach Cain) has been put on suspension for one game. He can be at practice with the boys all week, but his presence is not allowed at (Friday's) game."

Cain will miss this week's game at Winston County.

Cain’s brother, Chris Cain, will wear the headset for Friday’s game, but Skalnik said the staff will pick up the slack as a group.

Skalnik informed Dora's players on Sunday.

"I didn't want this to distract them and let this get in their heads," Skalnik said. "The kids have really stepped up this year. It's been a different year. They played as hard as I've seen them play (against Hamilton). Their perseverance has showed. We support our coach. The kids are very supportive of him, but we do have to stay within the guidelines of sportsmanship. I'm always going to comply with the wishes of the AHSAA and of course in conjunction with Dr. (Jason) Adkins and our local board."

After an 0-10 season in Cain's first year, Dora is 2-2 on the season heading into Friday's non-region game at Double Springs.
