The Daily Mountain Eagle Christmas Shoe Fund giveaway is set for today at the newspaper office.

The newspaper staff and volunteers took phone calls throughout October and November to register area children for the giveaway, which will be from 7 a.m. until noon today.

The giveaway is for shoe vouchers only. Share a Toy of Walker County Inc., which previously partnered with the Daily Mountain Eagle Christmas Shoe Fund, will not be distributing toys. The Daily Mountain Eagle will also be giving grocery vouchers to each family signed up for the program.

The newspaper will allow walk-ins to get vouchers from 9 a.m. until noon today, but those persons must provide the number of people living in the household; gross monthly income, which includes wages, salaries, unemployment compensation, child support, food stamps, Social Security and disability benefits and assistance with housing and utilities; a E-911 address (with a proof of address), phone number and Social Security number of the person registering; and name, age and Social Security number for each child.

Children 18 and under who are enrolled in elementary or high school are eligible to receive vouchers for a new pair of shoes provided by a list of local merchants.

Families must meet income eligibility requirements in order to be approved for the shoe giveaway.

The person who provided the information for the application will be responsible for picking up the shoe vouchers.

All applicants will also be asked to bring a valid photo ID, proof of address and Social Security cards for themselves and their children on the day of the giveaway.

Last year, the Shoe Fund campaign helped more than 500 children living in Walker County.

Donations to the Eagle Shoe Fund are now being accepted and can be mailed to the Eagle at P.O. Box 1469, Jasper, AL, 35502 or dropped off at the Eagle office at 1301 Viking Dr. in Jasper.

“For nearly 30 years, the Eagle Shoe Fund has helped children in our community, and we are happy to carry on the tradition that was started by former Eagle Publisher Doug Pearson,” Publisher James Phillips said. “This campaign could not have had the success it has had without the support of the people and businesses of Walker County. We are thankful for the donations we receive each year and ask that you continue to give so we can continue to help others have a little bit more merry Christmas.”
