East Walker Chamber's 5k on tap Saturday morning

The East Walker Chamber of Commerce will be holding its annual 5k event this Saturday, with races starting at 8 a.m. The race will begin and end at Dora Park.

Chee-Vee Whitfield, executive director of the EWCC, said participants can run, jog or walk the 10k, 5k or one mile fun run.

T-shirts will be provided to all participants and cash prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place finishers. Overall winners will be named as well as winners in different age groups.

Door prizes will also be given out. Kristie Tuggle, one of the event’s organizers, said all the door prizes are donated by the community and include fruit baskets and a variety of gift certificates to local businesses.

Tuggle added that the 10k and 5k races are chip timed but the fun run is not.

“The chip is built into the racers’ bibs and the time starts when they cross the starting line. It turns off when they come back across the finish line so it gives an accurate reading to the clock keeper,” she said.

While the EWCC has donated a portion of the event’s proceeds to local schools in the past, that money will go to the Sumiton, Dora and Cordova police departments this year.

We thought “it would be nice to lend our support to the local police departments and let them know we are very thankful for the work they do in our communities,” Whitfield explained.

Tuggle said, “It’s a great community event and we need runners.”

Cost to register is $30 and participants can choose from the 10k, 5k or one mile fun run. People can register online at www.active.com or www.localraces.com through Friday evening. Registration forms can be picked up and dropped back off at Pinnacle Bank in Sumiton, Hiott Financial or Homebuyers Marketing.

People will also be able to register before the event starts Saturday morning from 7 to 7:45 a.m.
