The Bevill State Bears couldn’t follow-up Saturday’s stellar victory over division front-runner Shelton State, falling to a second-half rally in a 70-66 loss to the Gadsden State on Monday at Glen Clem Gymnasium.
Nelson Haskin led the Bears with a double-double effort of 16 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks and a steal, while Latrell Tate added 16 points. Montez Brown had a double-double of 11 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks and Korri Edwards scored 12 points with five rebounds.
The Bears quickly built a double-digit lead to begin the game, until four minutes before the half when the Cardinals sunk a pair of three-point baskets to trail by eight, 36-28. A shot at the buzzer by Jevontay Rollins gave Bevill State a 40-30 halftime edge.
The Cardinals steadily chipped away at the Bears’ lead throughout the second half, finally taking control by a point, 65-64 with four minutes left in regulation.
With 23 seconds left on the clock, Bevill State was unable to come up with the game-winning shot, coupled with good free-throw shooting by the Cardinals gave Gadsden State the 70-66 victory.
The Bears (13-10, 7-3) travel to Wadley on Thursday to take on Southern Union.
