Lacey Evans made a driving layup to put Carbon Hill ahead and Abby Martin knocked down two free throws in the closing seconds as the Bulldogs beat Oakman 41-37 at Hanceville High School.

With the win, Carbon Hill advances to the Class 3A, Area 12 Tournament championship game against the host team at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The loss ended Oakman’s season.

Oakman’s Heather Thompson drew the Wildcats even at 37-37 with 1:24 remaining in the game, but Carbon Hill scored the game’s last four points.

“We played hard and did the things I asked for the most part. We got to the basket and controlled the tempo,” Carbon Hill coach Wade Tittle said. “After we lost to Oakman by 30 in a Christmas tournament, that was rock bottom for me as a coach. Looking back now, it was the best thing for us as a team. We came back after that and began to play better and play together. We realized that everything was still in front of us to achieve.”

The win also locked up a sub-region playoff game for the Bulldogs next week. The area tournament champion hosts a sub-region game while the loser travels.

Monday’s game was close throughout. Oakman led 22-20 at the half and Carbon Hill took a 38-37 lead into the fourth quarter. The Wildcats (15-13) had two chances to tie or take the lead in the final minute, but couldn’t connect.

For Carbon Hill (14-14), Molly Kate Atkins had 13 points, five assists and four steals, Martin had 10 points, Evans had seven points and nine rebounds, Makindle McGough had five points, Ricki Jill Burrough added four and Alayna Ivie had two.

“I’m so very proud of them, and we feel like it’s there for the taking, as far as winning the area tournament,” Tittle added. “For the past several seasons we have been the favorite. Now we are the underdog, that’s fine. It will be settled on the court.”

Thompson had 12 points for Oakman while Chante Williams added 11.
