A local organization is looking for donations and volunteers to help provide Christmas gifts to families in need this holiday season.

Kids Loving Kids is a nonprofit organization that helps children and teenagers, infants to 18 years old, in Walker and Winston counties. Thanks to the charity, the children receive Christmas gifts or other items they need in time for Christmas Day. The organization also has volunteers wrap each child’s gifts so they can open them on Christmas morning.

The gift giveaway will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16, at Living Light Church of God in Jasper. The event will start and families will begin being registered at 10 a.m. Pre-registration is not required.

Pam Dodd, who started Kids Living Kids, said the idea behind having other kids wrap the presents is to teach them about caring for others.

“Giving is a form of love and love is a form of giving, thus Kids Loving Kids,” Dodd explained. “If we teach the giving, it turns into the loving.”

She said they’re in need of new or gently used items including bicycles, makeup, hunting items, blankets, Alabama and Auburn attire, video games, tablets.

She added the largest number of requests are for underwear, socks and blankets.

“We’re asking anyone that wants to volunteer from any church, any school, any organization to come and help us serve and feed the families,” she added. Volunteers are asked to arrive at the church by 8 a.m. In addition to wrapping presents, volunteers will also help sign people in, serve food, take photos and helpings kids select presents.

Donations need to be dropped off by Thursday, Dec. 14. Donation boxes have been placed around Jasper at Dollar General, Captain D’s, Carl Cannon, Scott Crump Toyota, Honda of Jasper, Hyundai of Jasper, both Guthrie’s locations, Full Moon BBQ, Chick-fil-A, Jasper Pickers, Farmstead Baptist Church, Wendy’s, Winn-Dixie and Barry’s Furniture. Volunteers can also pick up donations from any individuals or businesses who wish to donate.

In addition to donations from schools in Winston County, Dodd said they’ve also had “truckloads” of donations come in from Huntsville for Kids Loving Kids. She’s hoping the organization will continue to receive donations to cover the need she anticipates seeing at the Dec. 16 giveaway.

In addition to needing volunteers the day of the giveaway, Dodd also needs volunteers who can help separate and organize the donations on Dec. 13-15 any time from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. to get everything ready for the giveaway.

Last year, Kids Helpings Kids was able to help 400 children, and Dodd said they’re expecting even more kids this year.

Any donations left after the giveaway, she added, will be given to Grace Ministries in Curry, as well as to the secret pantry program in the Walker County schools.

Dodd encouraged people who need help to not be worried about approaching Kids Loving Kids, saying she grew up in a single parent household and knows how difficult the holidays can be, especially when unexpected expenses pop up.

Those with questions or needing pickup for donations can contact Dodd at 256-318-4555. Living Light Church of God is located at 3420 North Airport Rd. in Jasper.
