Jasper was a mere two points away from a state volleyball championship in 2017.

This year the Vikings open the season as the team to beat in Class 5A.

Both Jasper and Carbon Hill start the season as No. 1 teams in the Al.com prep volleyball poll released on Thursday.

The Vikings fell to Pelham 25-20, 26-24, 22-25, 25-27, 17-15 in last year’s Class 6A state championship match.

Jasper coach Bobby Daniels returns most of his starters, including All-State Tournament Team members McKinley Ferguson and Tameyah Griffin, while adding Molly Kate Atkins, who transferred from Carbon Hill.

Jasper finished 57-5 last season. Guntersville is ranked second in 5A followed by Lawrence County, St. James and Arab.

Saige Beaty’s Carbon Hill team placed third in Class 3A last year, falling to eventual champion Bayside Academy in the semifinals. Carbon Hill finished the 2017 season 69-10. The Bulldogs return top players Alyssa Dutton, Lacey Evans and Grayson Evans.

Montgomery Academy is ranked No. 2 in 3A followed by Geraldine, Plainview and St. Luke’s.

Winston County schools are well represented in the poll. Addison (51-8 in 2017) is first in Class 2A while Meek (46-18) is first in Class 1A. The teams met for the 1A championship last season with Addison winning 26-28, 25-19, 25-19, 25-19.

The Bulldogs move up to 2A this season. In Class 2A, Altamont is second, followed by Winston County, Decatur Heritage and Westbrook Christian.

Meek is followed by Spring Garden, Athens Bible, Lindsay Lane and Phillips in Class 1A.

Other No. 1 teams are Bayside Academy (Class 4A), Spanish Fort (6A) and McGill-Toolen (7A).
