Jasper's football team will welcome a new head coach and an old rival when the 2018 season opens in August.

Cullman High School is back on the Vikings' schedule this season after a four-year absence.

The two rivals last met in the 2013 opener. Following that game at Ki-Ro Gambrell Field, former Viking head coach John Holladay got into an altercation with a Cullman assistant coach. Holladay resigned the following day and Jasper was eventually barred from the playoffs.

This year's meeting, the first for new head coach Bryan Moore, will be held at Cullman's Oliver Woodard Stadium on Aug. 23.

The teams have met 69 times with Jasper holding a 34-33-2 lead in the series.

After struggling in Class 6A, Region 6 the last two seasons, Jasper will compete in Class 5A Region 7 this season, along with Dora, Corner, Hamilton, Hayden, Lawrence County, Russellville and West Point. Non-region games this season are against Cullman, Central-Clay County and Deshler.

Jasper gets a bye week following the opener against Cullman. The Vikings open region play at Dora on Sept. 7 and the play their first home game on Sept. 14 vs. Corner.
