One group of area golfers have combined their love for the game with their passion for the community to earn more than $110,000 since 2011 for a Jasper nonprofit.

Byars-Wright Group, a Jasper-based insurance business, has sponsored a team in the Chubb Charity Challenge each year since 2011. Now in its 18th year, the Chubb Charity Challenge is an annual golf tournament aimed at raising funds for local charities across North America. Taking part in the tournament, agents and brokers, along with their clients, form golf teams, pay an entry fee, and play in local tournaments organized by Chubb’s nearby branch offices on behalf of a local charity of their choosing. The winning team in each regional tournament is invited to play in the national tournament each November, for a chance to win up to $50,000 in donations for their charity of choice.

The Byars-Wright team won the national tournament in 2012 and finished runner-up in 2014, earning $50,000 and $45,000, respectively. The team recently competed in the 2017 tournament at The Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport, Calif., finishing 33rd out of 45 local branches, earning another $6,000. Since the Byars-Wright team started competing, all of its winnings have gone to the Walker Area Community Foundation.

“I didn’t know about the Chubb Charity Challenge until 2011, but after playing for the first time, I was hooked,” said Haig Wright II, president of Byars-Wright Group. “We’ve represented the Walker Area Community Foundation since the first year that we played. The foundation’s mission is to build a permanent endowment to support the charitable needs of our community and improve the quality of life for our residents. The foundation takes a holistic approach to achieving its mission, connecting leaders, ideas, partners, philanthropy, non-profits and generations with one another. Services cover an equally wide range of topics, including healthcare, education and career development.

“In a small county like Walker, we are very fortunate to have such a foundation, and you can clearly see the impact it has on our community, especially for those who need it most,” Wright added. “When we help others, the entire community flourishes.”

For 2017, the foursome representing Byars-Wright included Haig Wright II, Haig Wright III, Patrick Drummond and John Lyon. Ty Czeschin, manager for Chubb and Son’s Alabama and Mississippi district, also joined them at the tournament. “What makes the Chubb Charity Challenge special to me is being able to represent the Walker Area Community Foundation on a national level,” Haig Wright III said. “Knowing the prize money we receive goes directly back into our community to help others is why we participate each year.”
