Martin, Dixon earn honors for Week 4


Oakman’s Garrett Martin was an unstoppable force on Friday night.

The senior running back rushed for 220 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries as the eighth-ranked Wildcats defeated Greene County 34-6 in a matchup of two undefeated teams.

Martin, who averaged 11 yards per attempt, had touchdown runs of 58, 45 and 4 yards and also added a two-point conversion run.

Martin is the Daily Mountain Eagle’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Through three games this season, Martin has 460 yards and six touchdowns on 53 carries. He is averaging 153.3 yards per game.


Defensive Player of the Week, Dora’s Achilya Dixon

Dora pulled off the upset of the week among area teams, shutting down Fayette County, last year’s Class 4A state runner-up, 18-7 at Horace-Roberts Field.

The defense was the key to victory, with Achilya Dixon playing a key role for the Bulldogs.

The junior defensive end had 6.5 tackles, 2.5 sacks, a pass deflection and recorded a safety as Dora defeated the Tigers for the first time since 2004.

With the victory, Dora moved to 1-0 in region play heading into this week’s region game at Hamilton.


Other top performances

•Dora defense: Blaine Neill had 12 tackles, a sack and forced a fumble from his linebacker position and Davien Freeman returned an interception 108 yards for a touchdown in the Bulldogs win over Fayette.


•Caleb Danner, Dora: Carried the load on offense for the Bulldogs in their win, rushing 32 times for 171 yards, including a 57-yard touchdown run.


•Isaac Robinson, Oakman: Registered 12 tackles and had a sack to lead the Wildcats’ defense against Greene County. Oakman held the Tigers to 114 yards of offense.


•Ethan Delay, Blake Adams, Lynn: The running back duo combined for 244 yards and five touchdowns in the Bears’ 51-6 rout of R.A. Hubbard. Delay rushed 13 times for 135 yards and three scores while Adams had 12 rushes for 109 yards and two touchdowns.


•Jordan Davis, Lynn: Led the Bears defensive effort in the win over R.A. Hubbard with 13 tackles.


•Devne Daniel, Corner: Totaled 213 yards of offense in the Yellow Jackets’ 48-27 loss to Mortimer Jordan. He rushed 19 times for 130 yards and two touchdowns and also completed 10 of 17 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown.


•Demetrius Kirk, Cordova: Completed 18 of 31 passes for 231 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed seven times for 20 yards in the Blue Devils’ 35-13 loss to Haleyville.
