Mastin leads Sulligent past Sumiton Christian

SUMITON — Marco Mastin rushed for three touchdowns as the Sulligent Blue Devils built a big lead en route to 35-6 win over Sumiton Christian in the Class 2A, Region 5 opener at Campbell Field Friday night.

Mastin leads Sulligent past Sumiton Christian

SUMITON — Marco Mastin rushed for three touchdowns as the Sulligent Blue Devils built a big lead en route to 35-6 win over Sumiton Christian in the Class 2A, Region 5 opener at Campbell Field Friday night.

Ten different players ran the ball for Sulligent (2-1, 1-0), which led 35-0 at the half. Sumiton Christian got on the scoreboard with 1:35 left in the game on a 5-yard touchdown run by Jordan Robertson.

Mastin started the scoring for the Blue Devils going in from 24 yards out with 8:50 left in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead. He added a 20-yard touchdown run at the 3:13 mark of the first quarter, pushing the lead to 12-0. Sulligent scored three second-quarter touchdowns.

Kenneth Stephens scored on a 49-yard touchdown early in the second quarter as Sulligent built a 20-0 lead. Mastin added his last touchdown a 57-yard run. The two-point conversion put the Blue Devils on top 28-0 lead. Sulligent's final score was a 29-yard touchdown pass from Camden McLemore to Tyrell Stephens with 2:55 left in the half.

For the Eagles, C.J. Bunn carried the ball 11 times for 55 yards and Griffin Myers rushed 11 times for 42 yards.

Sumiton Christian (0-3, 0-1) plays at Cold Springs next week.
