ARLEY — The Meek Tigers picked up a statement win over perennial class 1A playoff contender Hubbertville Friday night, earning a 30-13 home victory over the Lions.

The Lions got on the board first in the opening quarter, but Meek would answer back on a rushing touchdown by John Mark Abercrombie.

Both defenses would hold strong until the end of the first half, with Meek taking an 8-7 lead into the locker room. The third quarter would be another defensive battle and not allowing either team to reach the endzone.

The fourth quarter however would be the tale of one defense, with the Tigers standing strong and forcing four turnovers and cashing in on three of the turnovers.

The Tigers took Hubbertville by surprise with lots of help from Abercrombie 14 rushes for 152 yards and three touchdowns, Peyton Key was 5 of 13 passing for 100 yards with a touchdown and an interception and a very stingy defense.

Meek picked up its first win over Hubbertville for the first time since 2008.

The Tigers (2-0) play at Lynn (2-0) in the Class 1A, Region 7 opener next week.
