Morris W. Savage


Funeral services will be held today, April 12, 2017, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Jasper, where Savage was a member. Burial will follow at Walker Memory Gardens. The Rev. David Wallace and the Rev. Alan Beasley will officiate.

Savage graduated from Dora High School, where he received an athletic scholarship to play football at Auburn University (then A.P.I.) and was a member of the Auburn 1957 National Championship football team. He also played varsity baseball and served as president of the Auburn A-Club. Savage received the Bill Street Award as the Auburn football senior with the highest scholastic record and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, one of the highest honors for a graduating senior. From that point, all things Auburn remained dear to his heart, victories in all sports a cause to celebrate, orange and blue his favorite colors and service to Auburn an important part of his life.

Savage attended The University of Virginia School of Law on an academic scholarship as a Southeastern Regional Scholar in Law. He served as the student body president and was on the National Moot Court Championship Team in 1962.

A distinguished attorney, Savage was a partner in the firm of Bankhead and Savage in Jasper, and a member of the Walker County, Alabama, Virginia and American Bar Associations, as well as the National Judicature Society. Throughout his lifetime, Savage was involved in many civic and charitable organizations.

Savage was very interested in Alabama history and law and was an involved Trustee for the Alabama Department of Archives and History.In 1971, he was elected president of the Auburn Alumni Association and served two terms. He then went on to serve for many years as a Trustee for Auburn University and was also a member of the Auburn University Foundation Board.

Savage was preceded in death by his parents, M.W. "Bud" and Mary Barrentine Savage; his sister, Elizabeth Savage McCrary; and granddaughter, Virginia Ann Savage.

He is survived by his children, Mary Bennett Savage Trautman and Morris Wesley Savage; his grandchildren, Madeleine Bennett Philpot, Sarah Jessica Savage, Mary Claire Trautman and Charlotte Elizabeth Savage; and his sisters, Margene Savage Ellisand Martha Savage Gaston (Finus).

Pallbearers will be Gene Birdsong, Lanny Crane, Ray Daniels, John Denson, Neil Dichiara, Hoyt Elliott, Robert Higginbotham, Bob Long, Lloyd Nix, Sonny Stein, Charles Stephens Sr., Charles Stephens Jr., Buddy Thorne and Will Wagner.
