Cordova’s back was against the wall.

Locked in a tie game with Haleyville, the Blue Devils’ postseason run was put to the test in the Northwest Regional Tournament opener last season.

That’s when Cordova’s Isaac Chatman saved the day for the Blue Devils with a tie-breaking dunk in the closing seconds.

Final score — Cordova 74, Haleyville 72.

The teams meet again today in the Class 4A boys Northwest Regional opener at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace State-Hanceville’s Tom Drake Coliseum.

After sneaking past Haleyville, the Blue Devils followed with a win over Fayette County, earning a spot in the State Basketball Tournament.

Coach Heath Burns’ team brings a No. 1 ranking into today’s meeting. The Blue Devils have been led by the senior duo of Jayce Willingham and Chatman this season.

Willingham averages a team-high 23.6 points per game to go with 11 rebounds and 2.4 assists. Chatman puts in 21.7 points per game, along with 13 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 3.2 blocks.

Cordova lost just five games to state teams — Plainview (No. 1 in Class 3A), Huffman (No. 4 in Class 7A), Mountain Brook (No. 1 in Class 7A), Parker (No. 8 in Class 6A) and Central-Clay (Class 5A). The Blue Devils’ other losses came to ranked teams in Mississippi and Georgia.

Cordova (22-9) took care of Central-Florence 82-62 in their 4A Sub-Region game on Tuesday.

Haleyville (20-6) brings a six-game winning streak into today’s game. The Lions defeated Danville 54-37 in their sub-region game.

Carbon Hill followed with a 65-58 victory over Clements in the sub-region. Molly Kate Atkins has averaged 18.3 points in Carbon Hill’s last three games, including 24 against Clements.

Five of Colbert County’s losses have come to No. 1 teams Lauderdale County (Class 3A) and Deshler (Class 4A). The other losses have come against Class 6A teams Brewer and Athens.
