Jayce Willingham made two free throws with two seconds left on the clock to give Cordova a 49-47 win over Westminster Christian in a matchup of top 5 teams Friday night in Huntsville.

No. 2 Cordova (7-1) scored four points in the final seconds to take down No. 3 Westminster Christian.

“This is a big win because we are going to be going through an 11-game gauntlet. Now we start 1-0. It’s a good start for the stretch,” said Cordova coach Heath Burns, who will lead his team against No. 1 Plainview tonight at Cordova High School. “The stretch ends with (Westminster Christian), too. They are coming to us in January.”

The Blue Devils led 14-12 after the first quarter on Friday. The Wildcats battled back for a 28-23 halftime lead. Westminster Christian took a 41-37 lead into the final quarter.

Cordova stepped up on the defensive side in the final period, allowing just six points.

Westminster Christian made one of two free throws with 18 seconds left in the game, taking a 47-45 lead.

Isaac Chatman scored on a tip in in the final 10 seconds to tie the game. On the ensuing inbounds play, Cordova’s Demetrius Kirk slapped the ball away. Willingham came up with the loose ball and was fouled, setting up his game-winning free throws.

Willingham, who was 6 for 6 at the free throw line in the fourth quarter, had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Chatman, who was 10 of 12 at the line during the game, finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Kirk added six assists.

Cordova battles Plainview, the No. 1 team in Class 3A, at home today and travels to Homewood for the Steel City Classic on Wednesday at Samford.
