CORNER — Turnovers marred Senior Night at Corner, as the Yellow Jackets fell to the Oakman Wildcats, 16-11, on Friday night at Corner.

The Yellow Jackets committed four turnovers on the night, with the most costly coming on an intercepted pass from Corner’s Skylar Lara to Oakman’s C.J. Hall.

The Wildcats held the edge in total yardage in the defensive battle, 245-207, with Nathan Gilbreath rushing for 126 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown to lead the team. Gilbreath also added 25 yards through the air for a score. John Avery went 7 for 11 passing for 90 yards and a touchdown.

For Corner, Lara connected on 10 of 21 passes for 92 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. His top target was Logan Entrekin with four catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. Nick Brasher led the team in rushing with 52 yards on nine carries.

A bad snap on Oakman’s first series of the game caused the ball to roll out of the endzone for a safety and a 2-0 Corner advantage.

The Wildcats drove 57 yards on eight plays in their first possession of the second quarter, with Avery connecting with Gilbreath on a 25-yard touchdown strike. Avery found Nick Moody for the two-point conversion to give Oakman an 8-2 edge.

Following the halftime break, Corner cut the lead to three following a 21-yard field goal by Chase Jones, 8-5.

Oakman responded with a four-play, 72-yard drive, with Gilbreath scoring on a 54-yard run. Malcom Hogue ran for the two-point conversion, leaving the Wildcats on top, 16-5.

The Yellow Jackets mounted a seven-play, 60-yard drive midway through the fourth quarter, ending when Lara hit Entrekin on a 19-yard touchdown strike. The attempt for the two-point conversion failed, cutting Oakman’s lead to 16-11.

With less than two minutes left in the game, Lara was intercepted by Hall on the Oakman two yard line, sealing the 16-11 victory.

Oakman (7-3) travels to Daleville on Thursday to open the Class 3A playoffs.

Corner (5-5) travels to Huntsville to face Mae Jemison in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs.
