Prep Basketball: Jasper edges Dora in sweep

DORA — Kaden Shelton’s basket with 29 seconds remaining in the game lifted Jasper to a narrow 43-41 victory over Dora Friday night.

Locked in a 41-41 tie, Shelton drove the baseline for a layup to put the Vikings on top for good.

Dora had its chances, turning the ball over twice in the final 20 seconds after missed 1-and-1 opportunities at the free throw line by the Vikings.

Jasper trailed 33-30 going into the final quarter, but battled back behind a defense that allowed just three baskets in the last eight minutes.

Dora led 39-35 after a Taveres Howard 3-pointer with 5:50 to go. The Bulldogs scored just two points the rest of the way.

Jasper cut the gap to two points on a Brody Walden basket and notched the game after a Ryan Childers jumper made the score 39-39 with 3:47 left. The Vikings went ahead on a Brady Jett putback at the 2:12 mark and Dora tied the game for the final time on a basket by Tyler Leach with 1:41 left in the game.

Jasper led throughout the first half.

The Vikings were up 11-7 in the first quarter and pushed the lead to as many as nine points before taking a 24-18 lead into the half. Achilya Dixon and Geeter helped Dora regain the lead in the third quarter. Dixon scored seven points in the period while Geeter hit a pair of 3-pointers.

Both teams entered the game less than 100 percent. Jasper played the game without leading scorer Devin Harris while Dora played without a pair of suspended players.

Jett led Jasper with 12 points, Jeremiah Hammond added 11 while both Shelton and Walden added seven points.

For Dora, Dixon led the way with 13 points, Geeter scored 11 points and Leach had six.

Both teams play again on Monday with Jasper traveling to Northridge and Dora hosting Tarrant.
