Prep Basketball Roundup: Fayette County too strong for Curry

CURRY — Curry weathered the first half against Fayette County on Tuesday night.

After a nine-point first half, Bowen struck for 17 points in the third quarter and finished with a game-high 32 as Fayette County picked up a 63-36 win in their 4A, Area 9 matchup at Curry High School.

The Yellow Jackets stayed within striking distance throughout the first half. Curry trailed 16-8 after the first quarter, but cut the gap to six points in the opening seconds of the second quarter after a basket by Jon Harrison.

Fayette County took a slim 24-19 lead into the half.

Bowen equaled Curry’s second-half output in the third quarter alone, making six shots from the field and five of six free throws.

The Tigers led 48-30 going into the fourth quarter. Curry scored just six points in the final period as Fayette County padded its lead.

For Curry, Logan Aaron had 12 points, Zac Woder added six, Harrison put in five and Dexter Freeman added four.

Curry plays at Addison on Thursday and hosts Cordova in another 4A, Area 9 game on Friday.

Varsity Girls

Curry 58, Fayette County 35

Curry jumped out to a nine-point lead after the opening quarter and pulled away to knock off Fayette County 58-35 at Curry High School on Tuesday.

Keana Pearson got the Yellow Jackets going, scoring all eight of her points in the opening quarter as Curry took a 16-7 lead. Emily Aaron had six points and Ashlee Swindle added five as Curry took a 27-17 lead into the half.

Swindle knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and had 11 third-quarter points for the Yellow Jackets, who led 42-27 after three quarters.

For Curry, Swindle finished with 20 points and six rebounds, Taylor Rowe added nine points and six rebounds, Pearson had eight points and nine rebounds, Aaron had eight points and Hope McAllister put in four points.

Alex Henry had 14 points for Fayette County while Anna Beth Harris put in 10.

Curry (10-2 overall, 1-2 in Class 4A Area 9) plays at Addison on Thursday.

Carbon Hill 53, Winfield 44

Carbon Hill battled back from a five-point halftime deficit to beat Winfield 53-44 Tuesday night at Carbon Hill High School.

The win was Carbon Hill’s third over Winfield in the last eight years.

Carbon Hill (9-8) trailed 30-25 at the half, but outscored Winfield 12-5 for a 37-35 lead going into the fourth.

Carbon Hill forced 33 Winfield turnovers and had 22 steals in the game.

“I’m so proud of our effort tonight. They beat us by 25 points earlier this year and they outclassed us that night, but tonight we got after it, played together and — even when we got down in the fourth quarter — we responded and took it to them,” Carbon Hill coach Wade Tittle said.

“I was worried because we hadn’t played a game in two weeks, but the effort was great. It’s a huge win and confidence builder for us going forward.”

Carbon Hill hosts Fayette County on Friday night.

Varsity Boys

Gardendale 62, Walker 34

Walker’s six-game win streak came to an ugly end at Gardendale on Tuesday as the Rockets earned a lopsided 62-34 victory over the Vikings.

Walker trailed by seven points at the half, but was outscored 38-17 in the second half.

Ten different players scored for the Rockets, who won the first matchup 57-32 at Walker, led throughout Tuesday’s game.

Gardendale was up 12-6 after the opening quarter. Walker kept things close in the second quarter thanks to 3-pointers by Owen Long and Ryan Childers. The Rockets took a 24-17 lead into the half.

The final two quarters belonged to Gardendale. Walker made just three shots from the field in the third quarter, and the Rockets took an 18-point lead, 42-24, into the final quarter.

Six players scored for Walker led by Ethan Walker and Long with nine points. Both Isiah Cox and Jarius Williams put in five points.

For Gardendale, Tucker Vines had 17 points and Jacob Hallmark added 11.

Walker (9-7) hits the road twice more this week. The Vikings play an area game at Jackson-Olin on Friday and are at Dora on Saturday.

Gardendale 53, Walker 48, OT

Walker made up a six-point deficit going into the fourth quarter to force overtime, but Gardendale finished with a flourish to earn the 53-48 victory.

Gardendale’s Joy Sadler had six points in the extra frame and finished with 23 points to lead all scorers.

Walker (11-7) trailed 34-28 going into the fourth quarter. The Vikings battled back from long range with Natalie Bleazard hitting a pair of 3-pointers and both Anna Lee Stephens and Anna Claire Harris adding 3-pointers of their own to notch the score at 44-44 at the end of regulation.

Mary Kate Harrell scored all four of Walker’s points in the extra period.

Bleazard finished with 15 points for the Vikings, Alexa Waid added 12, Harris put in seven and Harrell had six.

Sadler added 15 rebounds for the Rockets and Alissa Cornelius had 11 points and four steals for Gardendale (12-6).

Varsity Boys

Winston County 65, Meek 56

Justin Richie scored 28 points, including 16 in the second half as Winston County earned a 65-56 win over rival Meek in Double Springs on Tuesday.

Meek held a slim 32-30 halftime lead, but the Tigers were outscored 19-14 in the second quarter, giving Winston County a 49-46 lead going into the final period. The Yellow Jackets held Meek to 10 points in the fourth quarter to earn the win

Chandler Ownby had 10 points for Winston County.

For Meek, John Michael Abercrombie had 16 points and Jacob Woodard added 14.
