Prep Wresling: Jasper's Vinson continues hot streak

Posted

Brodie Vinson heads to Thursday’s AHSAA Class 1A-5A Duals Tournament on a tear.
Ranked No. 1 by the Alabama Wrestling Coaches poll with a 25-2 record in the 285-pound weight class, the junior has won five straight matches and will look to help Jasper advance to the State Duals Championship this weekend in Birmingham.
Vinson finished his sophomore year in sixth place at the 2019 State Tournament after a 43-13 campaign in the 220-pound weight class. The transition to the higher weight class has served as additional motivation, along with his primary goal of continual improvement.
“For me, it’s about getting better, that’s each day and every time I step on the mat. That means improving on things I was bad at from the last match or things I still need to work on from the beginning of the season,” Vinson said. “My expectation is to be the best that I can and possibly win the state title.”
Named as one of Jasper’s team captains this season, Vinson understands his role includes leadership and passing on his knowledge to the ever-expanding number of younger wrestlers on the squad.
“It means a lot that when coach Tripp Otis and Hezzie Morgan decided to let the team vote on team captains that I was selected. That a lot of the younger guys look up to me and have put their trust in the leadership in my and our other captains’ direction is something I take very seriously,” Vinson said. “I try to make sure I tell the younger guys to do their best, along with showing them different things they need to do to be successful. It’s about getting better at each opportunity — it’s been that way for me and it’s what I hope I am passing on to them.”
Jasper hosts the first and second round of the Class 1-5A State Duals Tournament on Thursday at Carl Cannon Coliseum beginning at 6 p.m.
The winning teams advance to the quarterfinals at the Birmingham Crossplex.
