CORNER — After a nearly flawless first quarter where the Corner Yellow Jackets climbed to a 13-0 lead, the Russellville Golden Tigers scored 24 unanswered points to win the Class 5A, Region 7 opener 24-13 on Friday at Corner.

The Golden Tigers held a narrow edge in the overall yardage, 255 to 253, but an advantage in turnovers — committing just one turnover to the Yellow Jackets' two played a significant role in the final outcome.

Andrew Baker led Corner in offense with 178 total yards — completing 14 of 26 passes for 116 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions, while running for 62 yards on 17 carries with one score. His top target was Andrew Bandy with five catches for 49 yards.

The Yellow Jackets opened the game with two sustained drive for scores, the first 14 plays for 84 yards. Baker connected with Joseph Fuller on a seven-yard touchdown pass, but the extra point was missed — giving Corner the 6-0 advantage.

Following a good defensive stand, Corner was on the move again, driving 42 yards on 10 plays with Baker scoring on a one-yard run. Cole Huddlestone made the extra point kick to give the Yellow Jackets the 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

From there, the Golden Tigers took over the game.

Two quick scores in the final six minutes of the first half put Russellville on top on drives of 60 and 75 yards. With both extra point kick connecting, the Golden Tigers were in control, 14-13 at the half.

After Corner trapped Russellville on their own one-yard line, the Golden Tigers drove 99 yards on 15 plays to pull further ahead 21-13.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Russellville put the final points of the game on the scoreboard with a field goal for the 24-13 decision.
