Jasper will have its share of events during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The Breast Cancer Support Group of Walker County (BCSGWC) and the Party for Pink instructors are joining forces again this year. The two groups have several events planned.
On Monday, the BCSGWC attended the Walker County Commission meeting and received a proclamation that declares October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Tuesday, the Party for Pink instructors attended the Jasper City Council meeting and received a proclamation declaring October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
On Oct. 11, during their regular monthly meeting, the BCSGWC will welcome Vickie Mullinax of Medirest in Birmingham. Mullinax will be doing prosthetic fittings for interested breast cancer survivors. The fittings will begin at 1:30 pm and go until the last person is fitted. The group asks anyone who may be interested to please make plans to attend this 1 p.m. meeting at the Carl Elliott Regional Library.
Also on Oct. 11, Forge, a group supported by the Women’s Breast Health Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, is hosting a Restorative & Relaxing Retreat for breast cancer survivors. The event is free and will meet at the Benedictine Retreat Center in Cullman from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Call 205-838-6159 for more information or to register.
On Oct. 12-13, the BCSGWC ladies will have a table at the Community Bazaar at the Jasper Mall. The group offers guidance and assistance to those suffering or recovering from breast cancer. New members are welcome and encouraged to join.
On Oct. 13, Chevrolet, NASCAR and the American Cancer Society are offering a Track Experience to breast cancer survivors at Talladega Superspeedway. One may take a ride in the Pink Chevy Camaro SS Pace Car. If you are interested, please contact David Connelly at 248-622-8179.
Week 3 in October has been declared “Go Pink for Jasper” week. Kicking the week off on Sunday, Oct. 14, is “Worship in Pink.”
On Thursday, Oct. 18, Party for Pink is hosting a Pink Bar Crawl. Restaurants throughout downtown Jasper have partnered with Party for Pink. One may purchase a pink bracelet for $10 and get discounts everywhere from Lavish Coffee Bar to Twisted Barley and more. All proceeds will be given to Party for Pink. On Friday, all businesses, schools and individuals are encouraged to wear pink to show their support for breast cancer survivors and raise awareness.
Pink festivities continue throughout the following week. Bevill State has their Pink Pong and Hula Relay on Oct. 22. Harbor Chase Assisted Living hosts the BCSGWC group on Oct. 23.
The month concludes with the Eighth Annual Party for Pink Celebration. To be held on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to noon on the courthouse square in Jasper, Party for Pink is a two-hour dance party. One may purchase event T-shirts and tanks for $20 from any of the instructors to wear on the day of the event. Proceeds will be presented to Sharon Black, the 2018 Honoree. Donations are accepted.
