Sumiton PD investigating possible car theft

The Sumiton Police Department is still investigating a possible car theft that occurred early Wednesday morning.

“It started out as a suspected car theft and the individuals that were suspected of the car theft ran into the woods,” said Nick Key, Sumiton police’s communications and corrections supervisor.

The initial call about the incident, which took place on Cannie Phillips Road, was received at 5:14 a.m.

Key said the call initially came in as a motor vehicle accident involving a white Silverado pickup truck. He described the persons of interest as a Caucasian male in his middle to late 20s and a Caucasian female in her middle to late 20s.

“We believe the two subjects were attempting to steal a broken down vehicle on the side of the road,” he explained. “It’s our belief that before we could get there to check, the subjects ran off into the woods. At that point, we set up the perimeter, did some cursory searches of the area and didn’t turn up anything.”

He added that the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department brought in blood hounds to aid in the search, but they were unsuccessful in locating the two persons of interest.

Officers searched for the subjects until approximately 7:30 a.m. The search covered an approximate two- to three-mile radius.

Key said the authorities are still following up on leads and will release more details as they become available.
