Talley, Hall named Players of the Week

Tanner Talley’s last game in a Sumiton Christian football uniform was one for the record books.

The senior running back rushed for 265 yards, six touchdowns and had the game-winning 2-point conversion as Sumiton Christian earned a 56-55 double overtime win over Marion County in the season finale.

Talley is the Daily Mountain Eagle’s Offensive Player of the Week.

Talley, who has missed time this season due to injury, finished his career on a high note. He had touchdown runs of 5, 7, 42, 66, 3 and 10 yards against the Red Raiders. Sumiton Christian trailed 35-21 at the half, but rallied behind Talley, who had both overtime touchdowns, and finally ended the game with his 2-point conversion run up the middle in the second extra period.

The teams combined for 54 first downs and 973 yards of total offense in the game.

Over the final two weeks of the season, Talley rushed for 384 yards and eight touchdowns.

Defensive Player

of the Week

Oakman’s C.J. Hall

With Corner driving for the potential game-winning touchdown Friday night, Oakman defensive back C.J. Hall came up with the play of the game for the Wildcats.

Hall picked off a pass from Corner quarterback Skylar Lara at the Oakman 2-yard line with less than two minutes remaining, preserving the Wildcats’ 16-11 victory.

Hall intercepted two passes in the game, accounting for half of Oakman’s four forced turnovers. He also added four tackles in the win.

Hall is the Daily Mountain Eagle’s Defensive Player of the Week.

With his performance against the Yellow Jackets, Hall now has seven interceptions on the season.

Brandon Scoles

Carbon Hill Bulldogs

Scoles had a breakout performance in the Bulldogs’ 44-21 victory over rival Curry on Friday night.

He rushed 28 times for 211 yards and three touchdowns as Carbon Hill picked up its third win of the season — marking the Bulldogs’ highest win total since 2006. His touchdown runs covered 22, 19 and 1 yards. He added a 49-yard run in the fourth quarter that set up another touchdown.

Chase Cross

Sumiton Christian

The junior quarterback was the perfect compliment to Tanner’s huge game on the ground Friday night against Marion County. Cross completed 9 of 15 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. His scores, both to Jeremy Brown, covered 22 and 49 yards.

Tyler Goodwin and Cole Hargrove

Dora Bulldogs

The junior quarterback had his most productive outing of the year in a 30-7 victory over rival Jasper in the regular-season finale. Goodwin completed 11 of 14 passes for 215 yards and a 79-yard touchdown pass. Goodwin has now completed 50 percent of his passes (49 of 98) on the season for 666 yards and five touchdowns. Hargrove was Goodwin’s top target, hauling in three passes for 141 yards and a score.

Caleb Danner

Dora Bulldogs

Registered his ninth game with more than 100 yards, picking up 142 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Bulldogs rout of Jasper. Danner had touchdown runs of 7 and 2 yards. On the season, Danner has 1,765 yards and 20 touchdowns. He has scored at least one touchdown in all 10 Dora games this season.

Nathan Gilbreath

Oakman Wildcats

Gilbreath led the Oakman offense in a narrow 16-11 road win over Class 5A Corner on Friday. Gilbreath rushed 14 times for 126 yards and a 54-yard touchdown. He also hauled in a 25-yard TD pass.

Kolbi Fuqua

Cordova Blue Devils

Starting at quarterback, Fuqua completed 5 of 10 passes for 48 yards, including a pair of 10-yard touchdown passes to Demetrius Kirk. Fuqua also rushed 90 yards on 16 carries.
