Local breast cancer awareness advocates are adding a “Go Pink for Jasper” event this week, leading up to the seventh annual Party for Pink Celebration.
Wednesday has been designated as “Go Pink for Jasper Day.” Supporters can participate by wearing pink, sharing photos on social media using the hashtag #gopink4jasper, or purchasing a “pink special of the day” from local participating restaurants.
On Sunday, group fitness instructors from around the county will come together for the seventh annual Party for PINK Celebration.
The event was started in 2011 to raise awareness about breast cancer. All funds raised this year will go to Christy Swan, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in January.
The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Walker County Courthouse Square. Instructors will take turns on stage performing fitness routines.
An estimated 300,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,000 women will die from breast cancer in 2017, according to www.breastcancer.org.
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women besides skin cancer and death rates are higher than those for any other cancer besides lung cancer.
