What's going on


The “What’s Going On” Section will be featured each Wednesday and Sunday on A7 of the Daily Mountain Eagle, and daily on the Community Calendar on the DME website at www.mountaineagle.com. Community events and class and family reunions are listed free of charge and run in chronological order by calendar date and time. Community events and class and family reunions are only accepted from local civic, government and nonprofit (501(c)(3)) organizations, and high school classes and families. Deadline to place a community event, class or family reunion will be noon each Tuesday and Friday. Walker County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 7 is currently selling tickets on a drawing for a $250 Walmart gift card. The drawing will be held Saturday, April 2, at 10 a.m., at the FOP Lodge at 550 Kiker Lane in Jasper. Do not have to be present win. City of Jasper residential garbage pickup will run a day late next week due to the Presidents’ Day holiday on Monday, Feb. 15.


Book Club of Arley will host an Author Talk and Book Signing Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 3 p.m., at the Arley Library with Phyllis Lawson the author of “Quilt of Souls.”

Pleasantfield Volunteer Fire Department will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb.16, at 6:30 p.m., a with covered dish meal following the meeting. Everyone welcome and encouraged to attend, and meet new officers elected in January. They are also accepting 2016 fire dues of $35. Mail fire dues to P.O. Box 145, Parrish, AL 35580. All residents in the Pleasantfield VFD coverage area are being urged to pay fire dues by April.


Pilot Club of Jasper will meet Thursday, Feb. 18, at noon, at the Francis Israel Hospitality Center on the Bevill State Community College - Walker College Campus in Jasper.

Natural Bridge Community Association will host a Swamp John’s Catfish Dinner on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Natural Bridge Multi-purpose Community Center on Alabama Highway 14 north of the 4-way stop. Dine in or carry out plates. Plates will be $10 for choice of fish, chicken, or shrimp with tea. Deserts served while they last.

Thach Neighborhood Watch will host a “Covered Dish Night” Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Thach Community Center. Doors open at 5 p.m., with eat-in dinner at 5:30 p.m., and speakers at 6:30 p.m. Homemade cakes and pies will be auctioned to help generate money for the Thach Neighborhood Watch Program. County officials running for office in the March 1 primary election will also be on hand to answer your questions. Volunteer help is also needed for the event. Walker County Amateur Radio Emergency Service will provide a free Ham Radio Class for the Technician License. The class will be held on four consecutive Saturday mornings beginning Saturday, March 12, from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. All other classes will be held each Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon. Test will be given at end of final class on Saturday, April 9. You need to register by no later than Friday, March 4, for WCARES to order you a study guide. Study guide is $18 with no shipping charges when preordered, or you can order the Technician Q&A from online resources. You will need the study guide prior to the first class. Events listed free of charge. They are ran by calendar date and time as space allows, so there is no guarantee when or the number of days an event will run. Events are only accepted from local churches, faith-based ministries or organizations, and cemetery associations. The deadline to place an event is by noon each Tuesday and Thursday. Maranatha Baptist Church at the intersection of Josephine Street and Barker Street in Jasper will once again be holding all of its worship services in the church’s newly renovated sanctuary beginning Sunday, Feb. 14.
