What's going on


The “What’s Going On” Section will be featured each Wednesday and Sunday in the A section of the Daily Mountain Eagle, and daily on the Community Calendar on the DME website at www.mountaineagle.com. Community events and class and family reunions are listed free of charge and run in chronological order by calendar date and time. Community events and class and family reunions are only accepted from local civic, government and nonprofit (501(c)(3)) organizations, and high school classes and families. The deadline to place a community event, class or family reunion is no later than noon on Tuesday or Friday of each week. To place a community event, class or family reunion in the What’s Going On section, call Elane Jones at 205-221-2840, ext. 246, or email information to elane.jones@mountaineagle.com.


Walker County Community Action Agency will start assisting low-income senior citizens (age 60 and over) with their summer cooling bills. WCCAA representatives will be at the following locations on these specific dates and times: May 24 - 9:30 a.m. - Carbon Hill Community Center; May 26 - 9:30 a.m. - Sumiton Senior Citizens Building; May 31 - 9:30 a.m. - Sipsey Community Center; June 1 - 9 a.m. - Jasper Housing Authority Center; June 2 - 9 a.m. - Lueada Smith Library; June 9 - 9:30 a.m. - Thach Community Center; June 13 - 9:30 a.m. - Dora Community Center; June 14 - 9:30 a.m. - Oakman Senior Center; June 15 - 9:30 a.m. - Cordova Water and Gas Office; June 21 - 9:30 a.m. - Parrish Park and Rec Center (Old Parrish High School). Jasper Senior Activity Center has a special day for seniors every Tuesday, featuring games and movies. Popcorn, snacks and assorted drinks available. For more information, call 205-221-8513.

Parkinson’s Support Group will meet Tuesday, May 24, at 6 p.m. at First Christian Church at 400 18th Street West in Jasper. For more information, call 205-384-6302.


Walker County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, May 26, at 1 p.m. in the meeting room of the Jasper Public Library in downtown Jasper.

East Walker County Chamber of Commerce 40th Annual Banquet will be held Thursday, May 26, at 7 p.m., at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. Fred Hunter, the host of “Absolutely Alabama” and a WBRC Fox 6 News personality will be the keynote speaker. Tickets are $30 or table for six $150. For tickets or more information, call 255-0202.
