What's Going On... May 9 – July 20

• Opiates Anonymous meetings are held at the Jasper Civic Center/Desperation Church Monday through Friday from noon until 1 p.m. and Sunday and Wednesday evenings at 5:30 p.m. 

• NarAnon family support group for family members dealing with a loved one with addiction to any substances meet Sunday and Wednesday evenings at 5:30 p.m. at Desperation Church.

• Accepting Applications for 3- and 4-year-old children at Walker County Head Start. Applications are taken daily at Head Start office from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday.  Call 205-384-4779 to see what documentation is needed for registration.


• Walker County Democratic Party will meet at Victoria's at 5:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of every month.


• WCAA 16th Annual Art in the Park will be held from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at Gamble Park. Art, food, entertainment and lots of fun for the whole family. Call Kate at 205-221-1711 for more details.

• There will be a rally to help raise money for a 9-year-old child who is having open heart surgery for his rare condition. The rally will be held at noon at the Jasper Bowling Alley. The cost is $25. "Wear Red for Heath."  Riders are needed, all vehicles welcome.

• The family of Luther and Mary Romine will have a reunion on May 11 from 12-3 p.m. at Old Townley School (Townley Community Center). Lunch served at 1 p.m., please bring a covered dish.

• Walker County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (Ham Radio) will meet at 8 a.m., at the American Red Cross building at 1101 Viking Drive in Jasper. Everyone interested in Ham Radio is welcome to attend. We will administer tests for all license classes at approximately 9 a.m. Anyone interested in getting their amateur radio license or needs info about ham radio and emergency communication can call Jimmie Dill at 205-527-4602.


• Bethel Cemetery decoration will be May 12. To make donations to the cemetery fund, call Charles Wilcutt at 205-622-3890.

• The Jim and Myra Banks family reunion will be at 1 p.m. hosted by their daughter, Edith Ann Banks at 534 Jim Banks Rd in Jasper. Please bring a covered dish. Everyone welcome!


• Four-man scramble golf tournament at Horse Creek Golf Course. Registration starts 7:30 a.m. and tee off will be at 8:30 a.m. Please register by May 15 with teams and golfers. $65 per player, $10,000 cash prize for hole in one on select par three, with other prizes for other holes.

• T.W. Martin High School Class of 1957 will have their reunion on May 31 at 5 p.m. at The Landing in Jasper.


• The Dora High School Class of 1979 will host its 40th class reunion at the Horsecreek Golf Course, Events Room, from 6 until 10 p.m.  The cost is $25 per person, which includes a meal catered by Green Top BBQ. • Boldo Fire and Rescue BBQ lunch at the fire department on Hwy. 69 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The cost is $10 per plate and includes Son's Smokehouse BBQ, slaw, baked beans, bread, dessert, soft drink. Proceeds go to the fire department for new equipment.

• The Walker County Educator Retirees will meet at 10 a.m. at the Jasper Civic Center. There will be a regular meeting, then the group will go for a tour of the Bankhead House.  


• Blanton Family Reunion will be held June 8 at Five Points Baptist Church, 3718 36th Street, Northport, Alabama 35473. Reunion begins at 10 a.m. with lunch and fellowship to follow. Bring enough food for your family – paper products and ice are provided.  Descendants include family members from Ben and Fatima ‘Timmie’ Blanton and descendants from Ben and Irene Blanton.
