TANNER — Ethan Moore connected with Isaiah Mercer on a 13-yard touchdown pass with just over two minutes remaining, lifting Winston County to a shocking 32-27 win at Class 2A power Tanner on Friday night.

Moore had a huge night, throwing three touchdown passes, rushing for a score and returning a kickoff for a touchdown.

The loss was Tanner’s first region setback since 2009 and their first home region loss since falling to Addison in 2007.

Winston County, which fell to Susan Moore at home last week, jumped out to a 14-0 lead against the Rattlers.

Moore connected with Jeffery Daughtery on a touchdown pass in the first quarter with Moore adding the two-point conversion run for the 8-0 lead.

With 3:33 left in the first half, the Jackets (1-2, 1-0) scored on a 50-yard touchdown pass from Moore to Daugherty, making the score 14-0. The score was set up by an Andrew Kelly fumble recovery.

Tanner scored its first touchdown just before the half, cutting the gap to 14-6.

The Rattlers seemed to take control in the third quarter, scoring two touchdowns. Tanner led 21-14 going into the final quarter.

Winston County didn’t go away. The Jackets cut the gap to a point on a Moore touchdown on a quarterback keeper to make the score 21-20 with 11:15 left. After Tanner scored to take a 27-20 lead, Moore took the ensuing kickoff back 70 yards for a touchdown as the Jackets again cut the gap to a point at 27-26 with 5:49 left.

Winston County followed by recovering an onside kick, setting up the winning score.

The Yellow Jackets host Cleveland next week.
