Carbon Hill quarterback, Conner Young finished the evening 7-for-24, picking up 107 passing yards and one passing touchdown. The Bulldog backfield contributed with 100 yards on the ground. In the end, the Pirates were too strong on both sides of the ball as they went on to win 62-7.
The Pirates jumped out to a fantastic start as they scored on their first three possessions. The first score came when Zachary Taylor rumbled into the end zone from 1 yard out. The second touchdown came when Winfield quarterback Hagen Stovall got around to the left side and darted into the end zone from 25 yards out.
And the third score happened when Zachary Taylor bounced to the outside and waltzed into the end zone from 19 yards out. With 5:09 remaining in the first quarter, Winfield had a 21-0 lead.
A bit of hope arose for the Bulldogs when Young connected with Jacob Hudson on a 46-yard pass and catch for a touchdown. A Young extra point made the score 21-7 with 3:58 left in the first quarter.
Carbon Hill would get no closer.
On the Pirates following drive, Stovall connected with Reginald Nalls on a 35-yard touchdown strike. A Dillon Roberts extra point made the score 28-7 with 2:26 to go in the first quarter.
After a fumble recovery, the Bulldogs took over deep in their own territory.
The forced fumble was all for nothing as Young was intercepted by John Weeks, who returned it all the way for a touchdown. With 7:30 left in the second quarter, Winfield had a commanding 35-7 lead.
After yet another Bulldog three-and-out, the Pirates took over. On the first play of the drive, Jared Miles got around to the left side and sprinted 80 yards to the end zone to put Winfield on top 42-7.
After a fumbled kickoff, the Pirates took over deep in Bulldog territory. Winfield struck again with 5:29 left in the second quarter, as Miles pounded it into the end zone from 6 yards out. A blocked extra point left the score 48-7.
The Pirates’ momentum carried over into the second half as they scored on their first play from scrimmage. This touchdown came when Reginald Nalls showed his athleticism and ran 65 yards into the end zone. Yet another Roberts extra point made the score 55-7 with 7:33 left in the third quarter.
The final Winfield score came when Miles returned a punt for a touchdown with 5:50 remaining in the third quarter to make the final 62-7.
With the game in the books, Carbon Hill fell to 1-8, whereas Winfield jumped to 7-2.
Next week Carbon Hill takes on Cold Springs at home while Winfield travels to Lamar County.
