PELHAM — The Winston County Lady Yellow Jackets killed their state competition Wednesday.

The Lady Yellow Jackets made it a point to — repeatedly.

Winston County cruised through the first day of the Elite Eight State Volleyball Tournament at the Pelham Civic Complex, easily beating out Trinity Presbyterian and Ashville.

Kryssi Daniels led the Winston County attack with 34 kills and 29 digs on the day.

The Lady Yellow Jackets are one win away from a Class 3A state championship.

It’s gonna be a tough one.

Second-ranked Winston County will face top-ranked Bayside Academy at 1:30 p.m. today in the single-elimination tournament.

Bayside Academy (55-14) has won 11 state titles in the last 12 years, including eight in a row. The team won nine Class 2A titles (1998-2000, 2002-07) and Class 3A titles both of the last two seasons.

The Lady Yellow Jackets (64-6) got the warm ups they were hoping for though, dropping their first set of the day before rallying to win six straight.

Winston County opened with a four-set win over Trinity by scores of 23-25, 25-16, 25-11 and 25-17.

Daniels led the Yellow Jackets with 22 kills and 10 digs while Meagan Tidwell had 10 digs, Holly Posey had 37 assists and Savanna Tidwell had eight kills.

Trinity was led by Laura Simoneau with 13 kills, seven digs and six blocks while Lauren Kendrick added five kills, Brittany Hendrick got 26 assists and Lucy Johnson managed 36 digs.

The Lady Yellow Jackets then pounded Ashville 25-6, 25-2 and 25-18.

Daniels had 12 kills and 19 digs while Jacklyn Martin had four kills and 10 digs, Holly Posey had 19 assists and Tidwell added 14 aces.

Autumn Swearengin had four kills for Ashville.

Bayside earned a chance at a ninth straight title after a 25-21, 29-27, 27-25 win over fourth-ranked Montgomery Academy in the semifinal. Bayside also topped No. 3 Plainview, 21-25, 26-24, 25-21, 22-25, 15-7.

Trinity closed its season at 32-20 while Ashville finished 40-10.
