Debra T. Thompson, 55, of Houston, passed away on Nov. 18, 2010. Visitation was held Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, from 6-9 p.m. at Arley First Baptist Church in Arley where services will be held on today, Nov. 20, 2010 at 11 a.m. She will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. Brother David Jacobs will officiate. Burial will be at Houston United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Thompson was born on Sept. 17, 1955, in Winston County to Wayne and June Tidwell. She is a graduate of Addison High School, St. Bernard College with a Bachelor of Science, University of Alabama in Birmingham with a Master of Arts and Alabama A&M University with an Education Specialist degree. She was a Winston County Board of Education teacher for 24 years, principal for eight years, and Alabama State Department of Education Alabama Reading Initiative Partner for two years. She was a softball coach of Addison High School who won a state championship in 1996, a volleyball coach of Addison High School and placed State Runner Up in 1996, the first female coach hired at Meek High School for girls’ sports and an inductee into the Winston County Sports Hall of Fame.

She was known as Mrs. T or Coach by her many players and students. Her hobbies and activities include reading, fishing, traveling and spending time with family. 

She is preceded in death by father Wayne L. Tidwell; grandparents, F.C. and Lorene Bush, Elbert and Lucy Tidwell, and an infant brother.

She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years James Paul Thompson; mother June Tidwell; son Larry Paul (Amber) Thompson of Arley; daughter Cassandra (Dexter) Hearn of Arley; sister, Cassandra Tingle and niece Sarah Tingle. She was Bobo to one grandchild, Zachary Hearn. 

The family requests that donations be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital or Angel Tree Ministries at Arley First Baptist or Meek Baptist Church since she would still want to bless Arley’s children.
