With temperatures expected to drop below freezing this weekend, a warming center is being opened at Maranatha Baptist Church in Jasper.

Chris Sherer, executive director of the Walker County Coalition for the Homeless, said the shelter would be opened from 6 p.m. Friday night until 6 a.m. Saturday morning. He said temperatures are expected to be in the mid-20s Friday night, which led the coalition to open the shelter.

“It’s going to be really cold out there, and I’m sure there are people in our area that will need a warm place to stay,” he said.

The Walker County American Red Cross will provide cots and blankets, while the Salvation Army of Walker County will provide food for the warming center, Sherer said.

“All three of our groups are working together to provide a place to get people out of the cold,” he said.

Maranatha Baptist Church is located at 1700 Barker Street in west Jasper. For more information on the warming center, contact Sherer at 205-388-1201.
