National and international Relay for Life events raised more than $388 million for the American Cancer Society in 2010.

Local team captains are invited to gather at the Community Health Systems Activities Center in downtown Jasper at 6 p.m. Thursday to get a head start on this year's fundraiser.

"We didn't quite meet our goal last year. We were very close and hopefully this will be a better year," said Jo Thomason, accounting chair for Relay for Life of Jasper.

Thomason said Thursday's meeting, which will kick off the Relay season, is open to anyone who is interested in participating in the cancer awareness campaign.

Relay for Life events have raised $3.86 billion since 1985, according to the Relay for Life website.

More people participated last year than ever before. One in every four was a youth.

Relay for Life events were held at 5,146 sites in 2010 and 150 new sites are planned for this year.

The 2011 Relay for Life of Jasper is scheduled for May 13 -- 122 days away.
