A combination of snow and ice left across Walker County and the threat of further freezing conditions led to the cancellation of two scheduled city council meetings Tuesday afternoon.

Officials in Parrish, where the council meets on the second Tuesday of every month, confirmed the cancellation of its meeting which is normally scheduled for 6 p.m. Town officials will announce at a later date if the meeting will be rescheduled.

The Dora City Council, which meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m., was also canceled, according to Mayor Chris Edwards.

"In light of the forecasted and expected temperatures dropping below freezing by 5 p.m., we have canceled tonight's city council meeting," Edwards said. "The meeting will be rescheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m."

The Cordova City Council's scheduled meeting Tuesday at 6 p.m. was expected to take place, but due to an early press time, a report from the meeting was not available.

Walker County Schools and Jasper City Schools remained closed Tuesday. Walker and Winston County schools, as well as Jasper City Schools, will be closed again today, officials said Tuesday.
