For the fifth year, Walker Baptist Medical Center will participate in the weight-loss competition, Scale Back Alabama, which begins Saturday.

“We’re very excited to continue to be involved with Scale Back,” said Renae McKinney, community relations director for the hospital. “Walker Baptist is a big proponent of healthy living and healthy lifestyles.”

The Scale Back Alabama competition challenges teams of at least four to lose 10 pounds individually in a period of 10 weeks. The teams and team members who meet the challenge become eligible for cash prizes.

Last year, the program saw more than 30,000 participants who lost a cumulative 146,452 pounds, with almost 8,000 people losing the required 10 pounds.

Scale Back Alabama is sponsored by the Alabama Hospital Association, the Alabama Department of Public Health, Barber’s Dairies and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama.

McKinney said the competitive nature of the project and the support participants find with their teammates help many people accomplish their weight-loss goals.

“We’ve had several people where the program has jump-started them into losing a lot of weight,” she said. “There are testimonials throughout the state where people have used this program as a start.”

McKinney said many people say the goal of losing 10 pounds in 10 weeks seems a little low. She said organizers are aiming to help residents change their habits for the better rather than simply encouraging a dramatic change in participants’ diet and exercise regiments that would be ditched days after the competition.

Scale Back Alabama will begin on the week of Jan. 22-28 and end the week of April 9-15. Walker Baptist will hold weigh-in sessions on Jan. 23 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.; and Jan. 25 and Jan. 27 from 6 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Those teams meeting the 10 pounds in 10 weeks goal will be placed in a drawing in which the first team selected will receive $4,000 to be split among the members. The second and third teams drawn will receive $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.

Individuals meeting the weight-loss requirements will also enter a drawing in which 50 contestants will receive a $100 prize.
