Tater Janes becomes food service provider for Bevill State cafeteria

Diners at the cafeteria in the Frances Israel Center at Bevill State’s Jasper campus have seen a new menu and a new staff providing their food service over the past month.

The change came when the cafeteria’s former service provider elected not to renew its contract, which ended in December, prompting Bevill State to open bids to fill the vacancy.

The bid was awarded to Tater Janes Inc., a Walker County company with extensive experience in catering and a former restaurant in Sumiton.

Carina Starnes, owner and executive chef, said the feedback from customers patronizing the cafeteria has been positive and that diners have been welcoming to the change.

“People really seem to love the change as a part of a fresh start to the new year,” Starnes said. “We’ve heard encouraging comments from our customers and hope that we’ll continue to hear the feedback as we bring new items and options to the menu in the coming months.”

Starnes began the Tater Janes’ catering service in 2006 and has served clients such as Bevill State, Miller Steam Plant, the Walker County Community Foundation and the Walker County Arts Alliance. The company also caters to pharmaceutical representatives, doctor’s offices and weddings.

In 2009, the Tater Janes restaurant opened in Sumiton, where it served customers until its relocation to Bevill State.

Tater Janes will be open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The restaurant is also open on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“We were very successful with our level of business on Sundays in Sumiton and we hope we’ll be able to see the same level of success in our new location,” Starnes said.
