Walker tennis teams sweep Altamont

Walker’s tennis teams earned a pair of wins over Altamont at Valley Park on Thursday, taking the boys match 5-4 and the girls match 7-2.

Playing its first head-to-head match of the season, Walker boys, the defending Class 5A state champion, got wins from the bottom half of its top 6 seeds.

No. 4 Colby Hopper earned a 10-3 victory, No. 6 Wesley Killingsworth won 10-5 and Jonathan Glass won 10-1. In doubles, the No. 2 team of Joseph Harris and Sawyer Mullen earned a 10-4 victory and the No. 3 team of Gates and Killingsworth picked up a 10-4 win.

The top three seeds fell on Thursday with No. 1 Harris dropping a 10-5 decision, No. 2 Michael Sziegoleit losing 10-4 and No. 3 Mullen losing 10-4. In doubles, the No. 1 team of Hopper and Szeigoleit fell 10-6.

Walker, which finished second at the Dothan Shootout last month, will play three matches next week opening up with a meeting with Briarwood at home Monday.

The Lady Vikings improved to 2-0 on the season with their victory. Walker lost one singles match and one doubles match on the day.

No. 2 Kelsey Woodman earned a 10-5 win, No. 3 Jeana Burton won 10-1, No. 4 Sarah Warren picked up a 10-8 win, No. 5 Morgan Brasfield was a 10-3 winner and No. 6 Molly Wright won 10-5.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of Woodman and Amanda Bertoldi won 10-2 and the No. 3 team of Burton and Alyssa Knight won 10-5.

In extra matches, Mallory Maloy won 8-4, Knight won 8-0, Sarah Elliott won 8-4 and the doubles team of Elliott and Maloy won 10-4.

No. 1 Bertoldi suffered Walker’s lone singles loss, falling 10-8. The No. 2 doubles team of Brasfield and Wright fell 10-8.
