An Amory, Miss., truck driver was killed early Saturday morning when the tractor-trailer he was driving on Interstate 22 burst into flames after it struck a bridge pylon in the median at the Moon Road overpass.

Paul Richard Ledbetter Jr., 39, died at the scene of the wreck, according to Walker County Coroner J.C. Poe.

No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.

Ledbetter's 18-wheeler was transporting diesel motor blocks from Oxford to Memphis, Tenn., said Poe, who added that Ledbetter had been contracted to make the haul for Express America Trucking, Inc.

Poe said the accident that occurred shortly before 3 a.m. shut down westbound traffic on the interstate for several hours. Authorities also closed the portion of Moon Road that crosses I-22 to make sure it was not critically damaged.

"The state DOT (Department of Transportation) had to come and check the overpass out ... to make sure it was still safe," Poe said.

Poe said the wreck occurred approximately four miles from Jasper.
