This year, which is the 18th installment of the Bevill State tradition, the event will end with writers Sonny Brewer and Kerry Madden.
Sonny Brewer is the founder of Over the Transom Bookstore in Fairhope. His novels include “The Poet of Tolstoy Park” and “The Widow in the Tree.” His newest book, “Don’t Quit Your Day Job: Acclaimed Authors and the Day Jobs They Quit” is an anthology of stories told by writers like John Grisham and Rick Bragg about their early careers.
Kerry Madden is a children’s author and teachers creative writing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her novels include the Maggie Valley Trilogy and “Offsides.” Her newest book, “Up Close: Harper Lee,” is a biography of the notoriously reclusive author of “To Kill a Mockingbird” (who would not meet for an interview with Madden). The American Library Association’s Booklist magazine placed Madden’s “Up Close” on it’s top 10 list of biographies for youth in 2009.
“Sonny Brewer and Kerry Madden will be a delightful ending to a wonderful 2011 season,” said Penne Mott, dean of students for Bevill State’s Jasper campus. “We are so grateful to our community partners who have made this program possible and to the community members who have events this year. We look forward to seeing them on Tuesday.”
Previous lecturers this year have included Dora native Tim Hollis, author of “Cousin Cliff,” as well as local writers and Daily Mountain Eagle columnists Dale Short and Rick Watson.
The session will begin at 4 p.m. in the Dr. David Rowland Education Center on Bevill State’s Jasper campus. Refreshments will be served at 3:30 p.m. The authors will also be available to sign books after the lecture.
