Sumiton Christian beats another ranked foe

SUMITON — Top-ranked Sumiton Christian continues to handle some of the top competition in the state.

The Lady Eagles, the top-ranked team in Class 2A, beat Spain Park, the No. 10 team in Class 6A, 2-0 at Sumiton Christian School on Tuesday.

The Lady Eagles (34-8) got all the offense they needed in the bottom of the first inning when Cadi Oliver singled, moved to second on a ground out, stole third base and scored on a Clara Bowen double.

Senior pitcher Emily Ivey did the rest, holding the Lady Jaguars to four hits while striking out 12 Spain Park batters in seven innings.

Sumiton Christian added its second run in the fourth inning when Shelbi Smith scored on a Kathryn Warren RBI.

The Lady Eagles, who had three of their six hits in the first inning, were led at the plate by Bowen, who was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Oliver was 1-for-1 with a stolen base and a run, Smith was 1-for-2 with a run and Katlyn Sides was 1-for-3.

Sumiton Christian will take on Pisgah, the No. 1 team in Class 3A, at Corner High School on Thursday.

The Lady Eagles will also play in a tournament at Cullman’s Liberty Park over the weekend, facing Hatton and Oakman on Friday.

Sumiton Christian will host the 2A, Area 11 Tournament early next month.

Walker 5, Corner 1

Walker moved a step closer to 20 wins with a 5-1 road victory over Corner Tuesday.

Eighth-grade pitcher Faith Sims held Corner in check, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out six in seven innings.

At the plate, Memo McCollum was 3-for-4 with an RBI while Jessi Capps was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Walker (19-10) split a pair of games against sixth-ranked Moody on Monday, winning 2-0 and falling 8-2.

In the opener, Sims held Moody to one hit and three walks while striking out seven in seven innings to get the win. Both McCollum and Shaq Morris finished 1-for-3 with a run and both Amber Ivory and Tiffany Jones were 1-for-3 with an RBI.

In the second game, McCollum took the loss in relief, giving up two hits, three walks and seven runs — one earned — in one inning.

Sims started and gave up one hit and two walks in six innings.

For Walker, Morris was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Ivory was 1-for-3 with a run.

Walker hosts Cullman on Senior Night beginning at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Curry 3, Oakman 0

Curry pushed its winning streak to six games, beating Oakman 3-0 on Senior Night at Curry High School on Tuesday.

Senior pitcher Cyd’ni Al-Jabsheh held the Lady Wildcats to three hits and two walks and struck out four to earn the victory.

The Lady Jackets scored runs in the second, third and fifth innings. Morgan Walton was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Kendall Bishop was 2-for-3 with a double, Paige Dill had an RBI and Katie Justice scored a run.

Seniors on the squad are: Bishop, Al-Jabsheh, Walton, Amber Graham and Peyton Smith.

Curry plays at Winfield at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
