Running game — check.

Passing game — check.

Defense — that’s another check.

Walker was clicking on both sides of the ball in its spring jamboree game Tuesday night at Ki-Ro Gambrell Field.

Walker’s Tyler Phillips rushed for a pair of touchdowns, quarterback Carson Roberts threw for another and the Walker defense dominated Gordo as the Vikings earned a 20-6 victory in the varsity portion of Tuesday’s contest.

Walker’s JV also won the second half, 13-0.

In the first half, Roberts set up Walker’s first touchdown with a fourth-down completion to Nic Woodley to keep the drive alive. After a Michael Bridges run to the 10-yard line and a Roberts pass to Dashuan Kendrick, Phillips closed out the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Joseph Pedraza added the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 2:44 left in the first quarter.

Walker struck again later in the opening quarter.

Roberts hit Chancellor Allen for a 30-yard gain to the Gordo 28-yard line. A few plays later, Phillips scored on a 7-yard run on the final play of the quarter for a 13-0 lead.

On Gordo’s ensuing drive, the Green Wave pushed the ball inside the Walker 10-yard line. The Vikings put pressure on Gordo from there, stopping the drive at the 7-yard line after an incompletion on fourth down with 9:01 remaining.

One minute later, Walker scored its final touchdown.

Staring down a 3rd-and-14 from its own 3-yard line, Roberts hit Jeb Cowen for a completion at the 20-yard line. Cowen broke a tackle and darted down the sideline for a 97-yard score.

Pedraza made the score 20-0 with the extra point at the 8:01 mark.

Gordo finally got on the scoreboard with 2:02 left in the game on a 3-yard touchdown pass.

Walker’s Eric Vinson closed out the game with an interception.

Despite losing 25 seniors from last year’s team, the Vikings didn’t miss a beat on Tuesday.

Roberts finished the day 10-of-22 passing for 231 yards and a touchdown. Phillips rushed 11 times for 27 yards and two scores, Cowen hauled in one catch for 97 yards and a touchdown, Allen caught three passes for 59 yards and Woodley caught two passes for 26 yards.

Defensively, linebacker Jonathan Piteo made seven tackles to lead the way. Weston Griffith made four stops and Cody Brown had three.

Walker is coming off a 10-2 season in 2010. The Vikings made the playoffs for the fourth straight year under head coach John Holladay, who is 38-10 at the school.
