The Rev. James Herschel Hudson, 84, of Nauvoo, passed away on Thursday, June 30, 2011, at his residence. The Rev. Hudson was born in Lamar County on Feb. 7, 1927. He was a veteran of World War II where he served his country in Hiroshima, Japan.

He was ordained as a Baptist minister in October 1959 at Springhill Baptist Church in Millport. He pastored churches in Lamar, Fayette, Winston and Walker counties. He retired from full time ministry in 2002. In addition to his ministry, he served with Collins-Burke Funeral Home as a funeral director for 23 years. He was a member of Saragossa Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be today, at 2 p.m. July 2, 2011, of Collins-Burke Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Walker Memory Gardens. Billy Williams, Jack Lamon and Larry Harkness will officiate. Visitation was on Friday, July 1, 2011 and will be from 1 to 2 p.m. today prior to services at the funeral home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Brice and Willie Harrison Hudson; and brother, Denmon Hudson.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Vail Hudson of Nauvoo; daughters, Sandra Stephens (Jeff) of Hampton Cove, Brenda Elliott (Mike) of Nauvoo and Donna Kilgore of Jasper; sister, Mary Gann of Columbus, Miss.; grandchildren, Brandon Elliott (Tina) of Nauvoo, Blake Hopper (Chris) of Jasper, Tyler Kilgore of Jasper, Kenton Stephens of Hampton Cove and Diana Stephens of Hampton Cove; and great-grandchildren, Fisher Elliott of Nauvoo.

Pallbearers will be Brandon Elliott, Tyler Kilgore, Kenton Stephens, Chris Hopper, Mike Elliott and Jeff Stephens.

Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Saragossa Baptist Church.
