Renee Sides said that she and her husband, Lawrence, wanted to do something to help local residents who have been affected by the loss of the city’s only grocery store.
“We saw the need and thought, ‘This is going to help Cordova come back,’” Sides said.
Piggly Wiggly was among a number of local businesses that received extensive damage in the April 27 tornadoes. Owner Mark Bozeman has announced his intention to rebuild, but construction plans have not yet been finalized.
Renee Sides realized the importance of a local grocery store while working at the Cordova Activity Center after the storms with the grassroots group Cordova AL Rebuilding Our Community.
“A lot of people walked to the Pig, but they can’t get out to Jasper or Sumiton now. Others are just too busy volunteering and don’t have time to go to the grocery store,” Sides said.
Deliveries from The Farms on River Road are made on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Orders must be received via e-mail or telephone by noon the day before the delivery date.
Requests may include meats, dairy products, baked goods and toiletries as well as canned goods and fruits and vegetables.
A $5 delivery charge is included in each order. Cash and checks are accepted.
Sides said the service is not limited to residents of the Cordova area.
Renee and Lawrence Sides moved to Cordova a year ago with their children, Katie, Edward and Alexander.
The couple are Walker County natives. Lawrence is from Cordova and Renee was raised in Jasper.
“Something was just leading us back,” Renee Sides said.
